Penile Prosthesis (Joystick)
Erectile disorder or impotence is known as erectile dysfunction in medical terminology. The first choice for the treatment of erectile dysfunction is oral medication. If these drugs do not benefit, the second option is injections and vacuum devices into the penis. The next treatment option is the implantation of a penis prosthesis.
Penile prostheses are materials made of silicone to be inserted into the penis by surgery as the last treatment option in men with erectile dysfunction.
There are two types of penis prostheses, which are bendable and inflatable.
The bendable penis prosthesis,is a prosthesis that is permanently rigid, but has a bending ability. Prostheses in this group are not natural because they are consistently like erected.
The inflatable penis prosthesis has an inflatable mechanism. These may be two-part or three-part. The prostheses in this group have a more natural feature because they can be inflated and lowered. It also facilitates future endoscopic procedures for possible prostate surgery or urinary tract.
Penile prosthesis surgery can be performed by general or regional anesthesia. The purpose of the penis prosthesis is to make the penis become erected and to allow the penis upward movement. Penile prosthesis does not provide an increase in penis length or thickness and does not directly increase one’s sexual desire.
What are the advantages of penis prosthesis?
Patients who have a penile prosthesis can have sexual intercourse at any time and will be able to maintain the relationship sufficiently. Since the erection of the penis is permanent, sexual intercourse can be performed successfully at any time. After the penis prosthesis is inserted, they will no longer have any erectile problems in their sexual lives and a happy sexual life will be maintained during the old age. Penile prosthesis is the first choice among the other treatment options for the satisfaction of their spouses.
How long does the Penis Prosthesis Surgery last?
Penile prosthesis surgery may vary between 45-60 minutes depending on the type of prosthesis to be placed. The patient’s hospitalization may vary from 2 to 5 days.
What should be considered after surgery?
In the postoperative period, there should be no contact of water for about a week. At least 6 weeks of sexual intercourse should not be allowed. Sexual intercourse should only be allowed with the permission of the doctor after the examination.
In cases such as fever, penile pain, wounds on the wound, swelling and redness of the penis, inability to urinate or difficulty in urination, immediately consult the doctor who is in charge. The most important complication of penile prosthesis surgery is infection. Therefore, antibiotics are continued for at least 2 days after the operation.
